Poem: Winged Beast #the100dayproject Day 47

I was fortunate to visit The New Britain Museum of American Art and see the exhibit for Georgia O'Keeffe. Many of the paintings caught my eyes, but one in particular was a painting of a bovine spinal column larger than the hills in the distance:

Winged Beast

The spinal column is a species,
a winged beast with horns.
it punctures the sky,
tears the fabric of the world.
I cannot sew what’s been unraveled
I cannot wait for the mending to begin
I must sacrifice a bit of my spine,
take the feral animal out of me,
the musk, the feather, skull and horn,
and wedge it into the world
to keep us up right for a little while longer.
